Most of the marine and industrial metal surfaces, like ships and boats, tanks and pipelines and steel in concrete, continue to suffer from high levels of corrosion. Currently, to solve this problem and comply ISO 12944, those metal surfaces can be galvanized with expensive layers of metallic zinc or tin coatings acting both as barrier as well as sacrificial anode.

Graphene-based anti-corrosion coatings totally change this market since they can be easily applied, do not act as a sacrificial anode and are quite durable in most environments due to their barrier properties. In this case, graphene nanoplatelets’ aspect ratio plays an important role over the conductivity on the formulation of the inks, since higher nanoplatelets lateral size promote higher barrier to electrolyte environments.
